Quiet Please—Eaglets Growing
On Maryland’s western shore, a young boy watches a pair of eagles nesting in a stand of oak trees near his school. When the land where the trees are growing is sold to a company that plans to build condominiums there, the boy wonders what will happen to the eagles. Eventually, he and his classmates become worried enough to do something to help the nesting pair. Students, teachers, parents, and people from the local business community all join forces to ensure that the eagles can keep their nesting site.
The story is appealing for its look at the remarkable bird that is America’s national emblem. At the same time, children are encouraged to learn their voice can be heard
Middle grades–ages 8-12.[AuthorName]By Carolyn Stearns and Illustrated by David Aiken[/AuthorName][AuthorBio]David Aiken grew up in a small Michigan town and moved to Chicago, where he apprenticed with one of the largest commercial art studios in the city. Eventually he opened his own studio for illustration and design. He and his wife, Zora, left Chicago for a one-year trip on a small sailboat, and the year became more than twenty years of meandering by boat, allowing both to devote time to writing and painting. David sold paintings through galleries and private showings at yacht clubs and resort hotels, while continuing to do editorial illustration and commercial projects. Aiken is an artist member of the American Society of Marine Artists and has coauthored and illustrated cruising and camping books with his wife.
